14/15 May 2024. International Conference “Collective Memories of Transit across the Mediterranean”

The 14th and 15th of May, the University of Parma’s equipe with its socio-legal clinic, will host a two-day international conference exploring the stories and collective memories of migration across the Mediterranean. The conference aims to explore how collective memories of transit can be reclaimed and reimagined to challenge the dominant narratives around mobility, citizenship, and social organization in European societies. The event brings together relatives of those who disappeared while crossing borders, solidarity networks and associations, researchers, and legal practitioners to examine the past and present of the European border regime. The main topics to be discussed include:

  • The Mediterranean as a deadly border
  • Memories of transit denied on both sides of the sea
  • Legal struggles for the right to memory
  • Archives and infrastructure of memory

The conference will feature four panel sessions:

  1. Round-table: Collective Memories and Critical Historical Discursivity
  2. Ongoing Research
  3. Right to Memory
  4. Activism for Memory

The scientific committee for the event is composed by Vincenza Pellegrino and Jacopo Anderlini from the University of Parma, and Michela Lovato from the University of Genoa.
